Experts estimated that more than two million people were expected to call off work to see the premiere of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The Phantom Menace turned out to be a hit, earning almost one billion dollars worldwide during its run.
67. Fast Fact: Everything Star Wars became a hit after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. It was also the beginning of the collector craze. The very first Star Wars figures were made by Kenner, and kids and collectors alike grabbed them up in great excitement. The first characters produced were Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO, ObiWan Kenobi, Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper, one of the Sand People, a Death Squad Commander and Jawa. The figures sold for a mere $1.96 when they were first released.
